New Smart Logistics System Demonstration Experiment of Drone Delivery in Mountainous Areas in Jinsekikogen Town Looks to Address Regional Issues through Constructing a New Smart Logistics System

Jinsekikogen Town (Mayor: Yoshinori Irie), Seino Holdings Co., Ltd. (Ogaki City, Gifu Prefecture, President: Yoshitaka Taguchi, hereinafter “Seino HD”), Aeronext Inc. (Shibuya-ku, Tokyo, CEO: Keisuke Toji, hereinafter “Aeronext”), NEXT DELIVERY Inc. (Kosuge Village, Yamanashi Prefecture; Representative Director: Keisuke Toji; hereinafter “NEXT DELIVERY”), KDDI SmartDrone Inc. (Minato-ku, Tokyo; Masafumi Hirono, President&CEO; hereinafter “KDDI SmartDrone”), conducted a demonstration experiment for drone delivery in mountainous areas in Jinsekikogen Town on November 17, 2023, with the aim of building a new logistics service by utilizing next-generation advanced technology, and made the demonstration experiment available to the press.

Specifically, NEXT DELIVERY and KDDI SmartDrone collaborated to study the societal implementation of “SkyHub®”*1, a new smart logistics*2 that combines drone delivery and land transportation, which Seino HD and Aeronext are developing and implementing.

In this demonstration experiment, a temporary drone depot will be set up in the Yuki area to provide a boxed lunch delivery service utilizing drone delivery. In addition, we will explore collaboration with drone pilots trained by the town in preparation for disaster prevention and disaster situations and will also examine a model for efficient use of human resources that creates opportunities for them to play an active role even in non-disaster situations.

【Outline of the Demonstration】

1.Background and Purpose
In Jinsekikogen Town, the working-age population has been decreasing significantly, and in 2015 the elderly population exceeded that of the working-age population. While Hiroshima Prefecture’s population decline rate was about 5% between 2000 and 2020, Jinsekikogen Town’s rate was much higher at about 35%. The outflow of young people in the region is a major factor. Inconvenient living conditions such as lack of medical facilities, inadequate transportation, lack of educational institutions, lack of commercial facilities, and disaster risk in mountainous areas, as well as a decrease in employment due to a decline in industry in the region, are also thought to be causing further population outflow and aging society with fewer children.

Against this backdrop, we will conduct a demonstration experiment to improve residents’ awareness and identify issues surrounding regular flights to help resolve issues related to shopping.

2.Details
In this demonstration experiment, a temporary Drone Depot®*3 and Drone Stand®*4 will be set up to provide a box lunch delivery service, improve residents’ awareness, and identify local issues.

The drone delivery demonstration used AirTruck*5, a logistics drone developed by Aeronext, and utilized the SmartDrone Tools*7 Flight Operation System developed by KDDI SmartDrone, which enables remote control and autonomous flight of the drone using mobile communications.

On Friday, November 17, a drone delivery was made from Shirutopia Yuki to the Ono Social Education Facility (former Ono Elementary School), a distance of 6.5 km one way, in about 15 minutes and was shared with the press.

A resident who received a box lunch that was intended for food delivery said, “I was surprised that it arrived in such a short time. The bento was not messed up and stayed warm. This kind of service will be necessary when I return my driver’s license and am no longer able to drive a car. I hope that they will make this service a reality in the future.”

We will continue to study the societal implementation of SkyHub®, a new smart logistics system that combines drone delivery and land delivery, utilizing drones and other next-generation advanced technologies to promote understanding among local residents and address regional issues.

*This demonstration experiment has been adopted by the Organization for Environment and Development as a project eligible for a FY2022 subsidy for carbon dioxide emission control measures (a project to promote the introduction of advanced technologies that simultaneously realize social reform and decarbonization of logistics).
